PREMIER PAINTS ANTIFOULING BEATS THE ATLANTIC!

Having used your eroding antifouling on our heavy displacement sailing yacht with excellent results in 2008, during a typical Western Mediterranean cruising season, it was easy to select your company again as the supplier for my 2009 “epic”. I had entered in OSTAR 2009, which meant that the boat would be covering a pretty huge distance that year. The plan was to sail her from the Med. to Plymouth UK, then enter the OSTAR 2009 single handed race to Newport R.I., USA and finally back to her Mediterranean berth. I expected to cover around 9000 n.m. overall. I choose your Premier brand, which is semi-hard and has a high copper content, with accompanying strong antifouling properties. Being semi hard, I hoped it would last the distance [it did!!]. The boat was prepared in Mid March by a simple power wash and very light wet abrasion with wet & dry. The Premier antifouling was very easy to apply and the 4 tins used provided a 2 coat coverage (as per your on-line user guide), with a little spare to give the leading edges and waterline a 3rd coat.

We left our berth on March 22nd. The boat stayed in Coruna in Northern Spain for 5 weeks before the Biscay crossing in May to Plymouth. With the race starting on May 25th, I had a quick check and found her undersides still spotless. 3500 miles later, in Newport, a further check revealed absolutely no fouling. Yet another 3500 miles voyage saw us arrive back home in early August and this time my checks again found her spotless but with some erosion evident around the waterline. This was no surprise and frankly, I was pleased to see how little erosion had occurred after all those miles. It was limited to her waterline. The boat has remained largely stationery over the winter, in her rather muddy marina berth. A recent inspection from a dinghy shows a little soft slime build up but no evidence of barnacles or other marine growth on her hull. This was after nearly 9000 nm and 11 months being continuously afloat, the last 5 of those being secured to her berth.

My view is that the performance of your paint has been quite outstanding, over a long period afloat and in very varied sea water conditions, both geographically and with regard to temperature, which varied from 6 degrees C to 30 degrees C. Preparation was simple and minimal, application very straightforward and results fantastic. I will certainly be using your product again and I would like to thank you very much for providing a friendly, quick service at a most competitive price. Well done.

I will add that, as a professional yacht surveyor, I see dozens of craft every year hauled for inspection and often after a prolonged period afloat. It is rare to find a craft this free of fouling after so long afloat, especially in the warmer waters of the Med., so I have to conclude that Premier Paints must have a winning recipe here.
